How a lifelong LoL fan wound up making one of the most iconic Worlds songs yet

From lifelong gamer to iconic Worlds song creator: Chrissy Constanza’s journey through League of Legends music

A Gamer at Heart: The Foundation

We had an exclusive conversation with Against The Current vocalist Chrissy Constanza about her incredible experience creating anthems for League of Legends World Championships while being a dedicated player herself.

Against The Current’s lead singer Chrissy Constanza represents the perfect fusion of gaming passion and musical talent, having crafted some of the most memorable Worlds anthems that continue to resonate with LoL enthusiasts worldwide. Her unique journey demonstrates how genuine fandom can translate into iconic creative contributions.

League of Legends maintains a rich musical heritage that spans from traditional orchestral arrangements during champion selection to contemporary pop sensations like K/DA, True Damage, and the recent Heartsteel project. The game consistently innovates in blending gaming experiences with musical artistry.

World Championship anthems represent a particularly special category within this musical ecosystem, and few understand this better than Chrissy Constanza. We explored her creative journey behind both Legends Never Die and Phoenix, discovering how her gaming background informed these legendary compositions.

Constanza’s gaming journey began remarkably early, holding controllers since age three, which developed into a deep understanding of gaming culture. Discovering League of Legends at sixteen, she had already established familiarity with Riot’s MOBA mechanics before the opportunity arose to contribute musically to the game she loved.

The pivotal moment arrived unexpectedly while Constanza was working in the studio with her bandmates. Receiving the invitation from Riot Games felt like a fantasy becoming reality, perfectly aligning her musical career with her personal gaming passions.

“Creating music for my absolute favorite game transcended typical career milestones. I often joke that this wasn’t merely a dream fulfillment because the possibility seemed so remote that I couldn’t have imagined such perfect alignment of my interests,” she reflected emotionally.

The experience reached new heights when Constanza received the chance to perform Legends Never Die live during Worlds 2017. This performance opportunity allowed her to draw direct inspiration from Riot’s spectacular production values and thematic presentation.

A Phoenix Rises: Returning to the Stage

“The most breathtaking aspect of my initial Worlds live performance was witnessing how the entire stage transformed into a physical manifestation of Summoner’s Rift. It created the sensation of literally stepping into the game world, amplified by powerful drum arrangements and coordinated dancers that generated an overwhelmingly epic atmosphere,” Constanza detailed.

“That moment paralleled the intense thrill of securing a crucial Baron Nashor steal during a decisive fifth game at Worlds—pure adrenaline and absolute ecstasy combined.”

Following the massive success of what many consider the most iconic Worlds anthem ever produced, Riot invited Chrissy back to create Phoenix. The singer expressed deep gratitude for this validation of her initial contribution.

“When they approached me about Phoenix, I felt profoundly honored that my initial work had sufficiently impressed them to warrant a second collaboration opportunity,” she shared.

Beyond her own contributions, we inquired about Constanza’s perspective on other notable Worlds releases. She highlighted several tracks that particularly resonated with her as both artist and fan.

“This presents a challenging question since Legends Never Die remains my personal favorite. However, I genuinely appreciate Rise and found Gods incredibly impressive. Warriors holds special significance because knowing Imagine Dragons members actually play League themselves adds an authentic connection that enhances the experience.”

Giving It Their All: Beyond League

Constanza’s vocal talents extend well beyond Runeterra. Her recent creative journey led her to Eorzea, where she performed “Give It All” as the thematic centerpiece for Wicked Thunder—a track embraced by the Final Fantasy XIV community. We explored the recording process, discovering exceptional developer flexibility.

“The experience proved absolutely phenomenal, with the development team demonstrating incredible professionalism and accommodation. I was touring during the recording period, and they exhibited remarkable flexibility arranging late-night sessions across various venues and hotel rooms, even scheduling meetings for 2 AM my time. The entire process proved immensely enjoyable,” she recounted.

Given the community’s enthusiastic reception of this iconic composition, Constanza excitedly revealed her plans to begin exploring Final Fantasy XIV personally.

“Final Fantasy XIV represents one of those essential gaming experiences that consistently sits at the top of my playlist yet remains unexplored. I’ve consumed extensive FFXIV gameplay footage and supplementary content, providing thorough third-person familiarity. However, I’ve now installed the game and plan to begin streaming it shortly, eventually progressing to the raid featuring my musical contribution!”

Gaming in the Downtime: Personal Passions

Beyond recording sessions and live performances, Constanza dedicates significant time to gaming and streaming. She recently revisited the original Divinity series, inspired by her experience with Baldur’s Gate 3’s resurgence in popularity.

Streaming represents another significant aspect of Constanza’s routine, serving as her primary method for relaxing and engaging authentically with her community.

“Stage performances require an amplified persona that I genuinely love embodying, but streaming allows me to present my authentic self while connecting with fans and community members. This creates a low-pressure environment where I can maintain engagement without performance expectations,” the artist explained.

Despite accumulating numerous career achievements, Constanza maintains remarkable humility and continues expressing genuine appreciation for her supportive fanbase.

“If I were to acknowledge one aspect worth celebrating, it would undoubtedly be my incredible fans. I already feel tremendously fortunate simply having supporters, but recognizing how genuinely amazing mine are suggests I must have accumulated significant positive karma in previous existence. Thank you all immensely!”
