High school esports are expanding more than ever with new deal

European educational institutions are rapidly adopting competitive gaming initiatives, building upon the foundation established by North American esports programs over the past decade.

The British Esports Association and North American Scholastic Esports Federation announced a groundbreaking collaboration focused on redefining how schools perceive competitive gaming. Many educational institutions currently categorize esports as extracurricular activities rather than legitimate athletic pursuits. BEA and NASEF intend to revolutionize this perception by implementing comprehensive competitive frameworks with professional coaching standards.

These organizations have unified their resources to coordinate tournament operations and introduce structured esports curricula to secondary and post-secondary education. This transition moves competitive gaming from informal club activities to officially recognized athletic competitions featuring certified coaches and organized team structures. Participants will engage in competitions at regional and national tiers, frequently competing for substantial scholarship awards.

As the global esports sector experiences continuous expansion, both organizations have significantly increased their influence during recent academic years. BEA reporting indicates an extraordinary 94.59% surge in team registrations for the British Esports Championships during the 2019-2020 competitive season.

The British Esports Championships showcase secondary school and collegiate teams competing across three major titles: Overwatch, Rocket League, and League of Legends. The competitive season culminates each April at Birmingham NEC’s Insomnia Gaming Festival, creating a premier competitive destination for student athletes.

The United States has consistently developed its secondary and post-secondary competitive gaming ecosystems. Prominent Fortnite content creator and streamer Imane “Pokimane” Anys recently contributed $50,000 to University of California’s esports initiative, representing the inaugural major donation received by the program. Last academic year, ESPN Events unveiled the Collegiate Esports Championship. Subsequently, Full Sail University inaugurated a state-of-the-art esports facility on its campus grounds.

Intercollegiate athletics represent significant economic enterprises in the United States, occasionally generating comparable audience engagement and revenue streams to premier professional sports organizations. Competitive gaming demonstrates substantial potential to emulate this developmental trajectory within American educational systems.

According to NASEF data, more than 200 American colleges and universities have allocated scholarship resources for students engaged in competitive gaming programs, currently accumulating beyond $16 million collectively. The new collaborative endeavor aims to stimulate program growth and scholarship availability expansion throughout European Union member nations.
