In a dramatic offseason move, Gen.G Esports has completely restructured their League of Legends competitive lineup. The organization made the strategic decision to retain their talented bottom lane partnership while parting ways with the majority of their starting roster.

The departing players include veteran top laners Lee “CuVee” Seong-jin and Kim “Roach” Kang-hui, along with jungler Han “Peanut” Wang-ho and mid lane duo Song “Fly” Yong-jun and Lee “Kuzan” Seong-hyeok. All these players immediately entered the free agent market following their release.

Gen.G’s official social media statement expressed both gratitude and forward-looking ambition: “We are sad to announce players’ departures as we enter the offseason. We thank them for everything they’ve done for the team and send them best wishes to their future. Contracts for Ruler and Life have been extended and we plan to rebuild our roster around them.”

The team’s competitive decline began following their 2018 Worlds qualification, where they became the first Korean squad ever eliminated during group stage play. This early exit triggered multiple roster changes, including jungler Kang “Ambition” Chan-yong’s retirement and key players Lee “Crown” Min-ho and Jo “CoreJJ” Yong-in transitioning to North America’s LCS.

Following the departure of these core roster members, Gen.G experienced continued difficulties in LCK competition. Their recruitment of Peanut and experimentation with various mid lane options, combined with replacing CoreJJ with a developing rookie, produced only temporary improvements. While showing competitive flashes during late summer matches, management determined incremental changes wouldn’t restore championship-level performance.

Gen.G’s approach reflects an emerging strategic pattern within the LCK ecosystem. Multiple organizations are prioritizing bottom lane stability as their foundational building block for roster construction.

DragonX exemplifies this trend, having recently released their entire starting lineup except for established bottom laner Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu. This indicates a regional shift toward building competitive rosters around proven bottom lane talent.

Numerous high-caliber players are available for acquisition as the global free agency window officially commences.
