Following their third LEC championship title this season, G2 Esports maintained their competitive momentum by defeating Team BDS 3-1 in the Summer finals opener. This crucial win not only advances them through the upper bracket but also guarantees their participation in the upcoming World Championship tournament. We conducted an exclusive interview with support player Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle to gain insights into their performance and future plans.

WIN.gg: What were your general thoughts on how the series played out?

Mikyx: The match unfolded with more intensity than we anticipated. We expected a decisive victory, but BDS demonstrated unexpected resilience in the second game. Their Ivern selection caught us by surprise since they had previously lost both matches with this champion, making the repeat choice strategically surprising. Despite their recent defeat with Ivern, they executed the pick effectively and delivered a solid performance.

Their extensive use of Zeri also presented complications since we hadn’t dedicated significant practice time against this particular champion. Overall, Team BDS exceeded our performance expectations significantly.

Is that a tiny wake-up call, maybe just to make sure that no teams are underestimated at all?

Absolutely. We extracted valuable lessons from this series that will strengthen our approach moving forward. I’m confident our next performance will demonstrate noticeable improvement.

I believe we’ve only revealed a fraction of our strategic arsenal. While we showcased Evelynn and Kled compositions, we’re holding numerous additional strategies in reserve that weren’t necessary to deploy. Our draft selections maintained consistency throughout the series without revealing our complete tactical repertoire.

What are your expectations going up against MAD next? Is it hard to gauge them right now going from a loss streak into a 3-0 victory?

I anticipate a similar competitive dynamic to today’s match. MAD Lions appear comparable to BDS in skill level, suggesting another closely contested series. However, I maintain confidence in our superior preparation compared to our Spring split defeat. Since that loss, we’ve developed comprehensive counter-strategies and understand their preferred play patterns thoroughly.

Is there any team you’re expecting could be a bit of a tricky opponent throughout the rest of the finals?

Not particularly. We haven’t observed Fnatic and SK’s current form yet, making their potential impact uncertain. Fnatic demonstrated strong regular split performances that could translate into surprising results. SK typically excels in scrim environments, so I maintain optimistic expectations for their performance as well.

I’m personally hoping my friend Mark [Mark “Markoon” van Woensel] reaches the top four. It would be enjoyable to compete against him directly, so I’m supporting SK’s advancement.

That series locks in for Worlds. Is there anyone in particular you’re hoping to go up against or looking forward to facing?

At the World Championship, I’m particularly eager to face Cloud9 and T1. These two organizations represent my most anticipated matchups because I have personal connections with players from both teams. Defeating them would provide excellent banter material for our post-match interactions.

I’d also welcome the opportunity to compete against JDG since they claimed the MSI title and two LPL splits, establishing them as the perceived top team globally. I want to demonstrate through competition that their dominance isn’t absolute.

Against MAD, you’ll be up against a familiar support opponent in Zdravets “Hylissang” Galabov. The two of you are often considered in the LEC GOAT support debate – who do you think edges that?I actually asked Hyli a few weeks ago he said at the moment he’d probably give it to you. Would you agree?

Currently, I’d accept that assessment. Hylissang hasn’t displayed his peak form this split, so I’d acknowledge the temporary advantage. However, his international tournament performances consistently excel, making the overall comparison complex. The debate remains essentially balanced.

I believe the outcome depends heavily on specific match circumstances. We both exhibit volatile playstyles, so whichever player’s risk-taking pays off on any given day gains the upper hand.

I want to ask you about the All Pro Awards. I know since they’ve come out, there’s been a bit of controversy about those awards. What are your thoughts on how they turned out?

For the European region, the first team selections appeared justified since no other squads approached our performance level this split. Each member of our roster demonstrated clear superiority over their counterparts on competing teams.

The second and third team compositions are less clear in my memory. Excel’s inclusion seems reasonable given their significant improvement. Some players from other organizations might have deserved recognition, though I didn’t invest significant attention to these secondary selections.

The LCK awards seemed disproportionately favorable toward KT Rolster. I didn’t perceive them as substantially superior to other Korean teams, making those particular selections somewhat questionable.

Action Checklist

  • Analyze opponent draft surprises and adaptation requirements
  • Evaluate strategic reserves and composition diversity for future matches
  • Assess international matchup priorities and personal rivalries
  • Review award selection validity across different competitive regions
